History

In June 1990, Dr J.C. MacKinnon, the Chair of the Engineering Department at that time, wrote the following:

“it has come to my attention that at many universities (e.g. the faculty of Engineering at Queens) there is a committee on First Year Studies composed of both faculty and students. This type of committee focuses on the special needs and circumstances of first year students; it provided a forum for addressing any concerns of first year students and for promoting better liaison with faculty members.”

This marked the establishment of the Student Affairs Committee on June 22, 1990. It was established to address the needs of both first and second year of the Diploma on Engineering Programme. There would be a positive climate of discussion showing respect for all.

Objectives

  1. To provide a vehicle for interaction among Engineering Faculty Members and Engineering Students in areas concerned with academic matters. Each section of each class would have a class representative who would bring questions and concerns from the class as a whole for clarification or action. This should only be done if the class has consulted with the professor of that class and the problem or concern has not been addressed or resolved.

  2. To address areas of concerned with the Engineering Profession as distinct from student-organized activities, e.g. sports, social, etc. and thus provide a means for educational enhancement i.e. Code of Ethics, APENS, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Director of the Core – Chair meetings, take issues to faculty or decision makers

  • DES VP Academics – Recruit members, take notes

  • Manager, Student Engagement – Organize meetings, support students, take positive feedback to faculty

  • Student Representatives – Open communications with peers, actively participate in meetings, encourage school spirit

CCR Information

Students who volunteer to act as SAC members are required to participate in bi-weekly meetings where issues facing students are formally presented to the Director of the Core Program (Years 1 & 2) Engineering. SAC members liaise between their fellow students and the faculty through these meetings. Students represent their peers in a professional manner by bringing issues important to the students to the administration in a formal setting. SAC members regularly check in with their cohort to inquire about matters in need of attention and create a voice for student issues and concerns.
